Sunday 15th August saw the annual Moors and Christians parade in El Vergel.

This years event seemed much larger and better than 2009’s and back to how it had been in previous years.

This parade caters for all ages of participants from 1 year of age upwards. Here are a few photos of this years event.

Ten of us went to Oliva beach for the San Juan festival which celebrates the coming of summer. We were not alone there were hundreds of people on the beach with bonfires every 20 meters or so. We set up not far from the pedestrian walkway and had a few drinks followed by a picnic dinner followed by a few more drinks.

As it started to get dark some of the bonfires were lit and by the time it was fully dark at about 10.30 they were all burning away merrily. Fireworks were let of sporadically and there were several hot air Chinese balloons floating in the sky.

A great evening was had by all and we have decided to try and repeat the picnic on the beach idea once a month throughout the summer.

A local village, Beniarbeig, had a paella competition. The participants were all residents of the village and they had to prepare a paella with a set of ingredients supplied by the organisers (some augmented the ingredients with some of their own which was not strictly allowed). Once completed the judges sampled each paella and awarded prizes to the best 3. Unfortunately James and Mike’s didn’t place. A great evening was had by all with free beer provided to about 300 people in the square. Unfortunately a heavy shower of rain curtailed the evening at about 11.30.
